Man on the Rug

When you’re a kid and don’t have a particularly large vocabulary, sometimes you have to make do with what you’ve got when it comes to hearing songs on the radio.  At the tender age of 5, the word “band” meant one of those elastic things that are fun to play with and fling at your friends: rubber bands.  I had no concept of the musical “band” as a group of musicians.  So, when Wings released Band on the Run, I heard Man on the Rug (AM clarity left much to be desired as well).  When my family caught on to what I was calling the song, they corrected me and told me it was Band on the Run.  Perhaps you can imagine my trouble trying to envision a rubber band trying to run away from something.

I still like my words better.
