Bloodletting – Concrete Blonde (1990)

I’m sure most people know of Concrete Blonde because of the song Joey from this album, but in the same vein as I discovered Chumbawamba, I ventured beyond the lone hit and tried the rest.

What a piece of work! It’s a dark album, for sure, not just in theme, but in production quality as well. Don’t let that get in your way. If you have trouble swallowing the long opening title track, start with the second song (the sweet up-tempo The Sky is a Poisonous Garden), and you’ll be carefully cradled by Johnette Napolitano from there. I particularly enjoy track 4 (The Darkening of the Light), which has Peter Buck from R.E.M. on mandolin.
