Fun @ Gigs – Episode 2: Fire!

My third band was called Thought Brigade. Unlike the first two, which were more hard rock, Thought Brigade’s music was reminiscent of 80s alternative rock, when R.E.M. ruled the underground airwaves (lovely visual there) and you didn’t need polish to garner a following.

While we were primarily an electric band, we did an acoustic show at Herrell’s Cafe in Brighton, MA to show off our versatility (look at us go!). This meant that the guitar and bass were acoustic, and the drummer played a very small kit with brushes, but our keyboardist played as usual. We had some technical difficulties in the keyboard corner at one point, so while Alan took care of that, Rob on guitar/vocals decided to keep the crowd entertained and started playing The One I Love by R.E.M. The thing is … he only played the verses. I shrugged it off at the time, figuring we had more professional things to do than argue about how a cover song should go, but during a rant that Alan had several days later, when he was considering leaving the band, he nearly screamed “You can’t do The One I Love without doing the Fire part!!”

Again, maybe you had to be there, but I’ll never forget how amusingly irritated Alan was about the incident, and now, hearing The One I Love makes me smile a little bit wider every time.
